Supreme Court pushes judge appointments, government keen on fixing memorandum of procedure

IndiaTimes Monday, 23 October 2023
The Indian government has stressed the need for the Supreme Court to finalize the long-pending memorandum of procedure (MoP) before appointing judges. The government and the Supreme Court collegium have had differences on some of the court's picks for high court judgeships. The government has sent reminders to the court regarding the MoP, which has been pending for seven years. The proposal is to set up separate search-and-evaluation committees for the Supreme Court and high courts, but the composition of these committees has been held up due to disagreements. The matter will be reviewed by the Supreme Court on November 7.
