Former President Pranab Mukherjee tested coronavirus positive on August 10. Mukherjee had gone to the hospital for separate procedure, where he was diagnosed with coronavirus. In international news, Paris has tightened rules regarding wearing of face masks. The French capital has reportedly made masks mandatory in certain crowded areas for people aged 11 and above. In the neighbouring United Kingdom, Prime Minister Boris Johnson called reopening of schools in September the government's moral responsibility. Union Defence Minister Rajnath Singh released a book titled 'Connecting, Communicating, Changing' in Delhi on August 11. The book chronicles M. Venkaiah Naidu's three years in office as the Vice President of India. Rajnath Singh spoke on the importance of the book and said it will give a different perspective to the readers.
NITI Aayog member and former Director-General of Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) Vijay Kumar Saraswat on August 09 hailed the step taken by Defence Minister Rajnath Singh to impose import embargo on 101 defence items. "It is a very major initiative of GOI and particularly the Ministry of Defence in line with the announcement of Prime Minister Narendra Modi for making the country self reliant under Aatmanirbhar Bharat," said VK Saraswat. He added that the list of 101 equipments which have been given today will indicate the capability of the country to manufacture, design and develop. "The initiative taken by the Centre certainly goes a long way in promoting the development, production and indigenizing of the capability which exist in the country today."
Ambassador of Israel to India Ron Malka on July 31 visited special testing site created at Dr Ram Manohar Lohia (RML) Hospital today to witness ongoing trials since last three days of rapid COVID-19 testing. Malka was accompanied by Principal Scientific Adviser to GOI, K. VijayRaghavan. This joint research is progressing according to the plan. It's being jointly developed in cooperation with DRDD Ministry of Defence Israel and DRDO, CSIR and PSA, India.
Embassy of Israel on August 11 contributed state-of-the-art artificial intelligence based technologies and high-end equipment to the AIIMS, Delhi. Contribution was made as a part of Israel-India cooperation to fight ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. "It is the most advanced medical equipment that we developed in Israel especially for fighting COVID-19. Some of it was contributed by companies, they just love India and some of it was purchased with special fund allocated by our Foreign Minister," said Israel's Envoy to India Ron Malka.
Russia claimed to have developed vaccine for COVID-19. Speaking on it, AIIMS Director Randeep Guleria said, "If Russia's vaccine is successful, then we will have to see critically whether it is safe and effective. India has the capacity for mass production of vaccine." Russia became the first country to register for COVID-19 vaccine on August 11. The DRDO-built Sardar Vallabh Bhai Patel COVID-19 Hospital in Delhi Cantonment is the temporary hospital structure. The hospital will have 1,000 beds including 250 ICU beds. "DRDO, Ministry of Home Affairs, Tata Sons Industries and with support of many organisations set up this 1000 bedded temporary hospital for COVID-19 patients in just 12 days. Over 250 intensive care units are available here in accordance with WHO guidelines," Rajnath Singh said.
Union Minister G Kishan Reddy visited DRDO-built COVID Hospital near Air Force Station in Delhi on July 05. CM Arvind Kejriwal also visited the COVID hospital. Speaking on it, CM Kejriwal said, "For now, there is no scarcity of hospital beds, we have over 15,000 beds out of which 5300 are occupied. There is a paucity of ICU beds.
