India set to approve its first Covid vaccine; nationwide dry run tomorrow
Friday, 1 January 2021 A day ahead of the nationwide Covid-19 vaccination dry run, the Indian drug regulator's expert panel on Friday cleared the decks for emergency use authorisation for the vaccine developed by AstraZeneca and Oxford University. The vaccine, which is being produced locally under the name of Covishield by Serum Institute of India, will now be given the final go-ahead by DGCI.

Health Secretary Rajesh Bhushan, on January 28, briefed media about the ongoing COVID vaccination drive. While addressing the media, Bhushan informed that over 25 lakh vaccine doses have been administered so far, as per data available till 2 pm today. He also said that the number of active cases are declining and there are 1,75,000 active cases in the country as of now. "A steady and declining trend is being exhibited," said Bhushan.

India once again established its position as a reliable partner in Covid-19 assistance. It dispatched Covishield to Bahrain and Sri Lanka under the Vaccine Maitri Initiative. Sri Lanka to receive a consignment of 50,400 doses, while Bahrain to get 10,800 doses. Covishield developed by Serum Institute of India was loaded to cargo aircraft at Mumbai. The cargo aircraft left Mumbai airport as per schedule at 7:55 am for Manama. The vaccine consignment for Colombo, which delayed for 15 minutes, left at 9:00 am. Meanwhile, India has supplied vaccines to its neighbours under neighbourhood first policy. Bhutan, Maldives, Nepal, Myanmar, Sri Lanka, Afghanistan, Bangladesh received vaccines. India sees international cooperation in the area of fight against Covid-19 as its duty. New Delhi has played the role of the first responder in the region.
