Cabinet approves Garib Kalyan food grain programme for another 5 years

The union cabinet meeting, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, approved the extension of the PM Garib Kalyan Yojana for another five years. This scheme provides free grains to eligible citizens under the public distribution scheme. Initially started during the Covid pandemic, it aimed to provide additional food distribution to ration card holders. The PMGKAY scheme was launched in April 2020 to help the poor and needy during the economic disruptions caused by the pandemic. It has been extended in phases and has benefitted 80 crore beneficiaries. The Prime Minister announced the extension during an election rally.
