Government seeks to retain status of CEC/ECs as par with SC judge; proposes immunity from court cases for serving and ex CEC/ECs

IndiaTimes Tuesday, 12 December 2023
The government has moved amendments to the Bill regarding the appointment and service conditions of the Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) and election commissioners. The amendments aim to retain the status of the CEC and election commissioners on par with a Supreme Court judge, instead of downgrading it to that of a Cabinet secretary. The amendments also propose granting protection to serving and former CECs and election commissioners from civil or criminal proceedings for any act committed in the discharge of their official duty.
