The US Government Reopens – but Only Temporarily

The US Government Reopens – but Only Temporarilyby 👨‍💻 Adam Yardley

At 35 days, President Trump’s recent partial US government shutdown was the longest in recent history. As it appeared that federal workers were facing a second month without wages as a result of a standoff between the President and a Democrat-controlled House of Representatives, Trump has in fact finally conceded – to an extent – and, according to The New York Times, has reopened government for up to three weeks. The move comes shortly after Trump suggested that he would have been open to a temporary move providing that a ‘down payment’ for his Mexico border wall was offered. The whole shutdown has arisen as a result of Trump requesting $5.7 billion from the Senate to pay for the border – however, at a time when the Democrats have just taken majority in the House – and with Nancy Pelosi installed as Speaker – he has been faced with considerable defiance.

“We really have no choice but to build a powerful wall or steel barrier,” Trump is quoted as saying in public address. “If we don’t get a fair deal from Congress, the government will either shut down on Feb 15, or I will use the powers afforded to me under the laws and Constitution of the United States to address this emergency.”

The President has previously stated that he would be willing to revert to a State of Emergency – where vital funds from elsewhere in the government would be diverted to pay for the border wall – if resistance from Congress remained absolute. Both Republicans and Democrats proposed options for an outright deal, both of which were turned down in the majority. There have even been Republicans defecting in their votes.

This stopgap will open up negotiations once again – as a very public battle between President Trump and Speaker Pelosi continues – but Trump has already had a considerable knock-back to his own approval rating, and a number of high-profile conservative broadcasters have spoken out against what has been perceived by some as his ‘backing down’ against Democrat resistance. In a week where high-profile former Trump associate Roger Stone was arrested as part of the Mueller probe – and with said probe getting ever closer – 2019 is proving to be a testing year for the President thus far, and also for his supporters – some of whom are thought to be more than disappointed by this temporary shutdown repeal. Will Trump get his wall? Let’s wait and see.
