The severe weather, accompanied by heavy rain and hailstorms, lashed the capital of Guangdong province.

Authorities classified the tornado as level three in intensity, indicating significant destruction but lower than the highest level of five.

State news agency Xinhua reported that an investigation into the extent of damage caused by the tornado was underway.
