Kyiv in Chaos After Massive Russian Air Assault—Homes Destroyed, Civilians Wounded | Sleepless Night
On a devastating night for Ukraine, Russia launched an overwhelming assault using 324 drones and 7 missiles, targeting key infrastructure and civilian areas.
A multi-storey apartment building in Kyiv’s Darnytskyi district was hit, leaving eight injured, including a three-year-old child.
While Ukraine’s air defenses fought back, some attacks got through — and the town of Starokostyantyniv, home to a strategic air base, was among the primary targets.
Air raid sirens blared across the country for hours, and even Polish fighter jets were scrambled as the threat extended beyond Ukraine’s borders.
Russia has unveiled the ‘Posokh,’ a portable, ytterbium-based laser air defense system capable of disabling Ukrainian drones within a 2 km range using invisible laser beams. The announcement follows successful tests and comes as Russia escalates airstrikes on Ukraine. On July 28, a drone and missile barrage hit Kyiv, injuring eight civilians, including a child. The Darnytskyi district was among the hardest hit. With 324 drones launched overnight, Ukraine’s air defenses are under mounting pressure amid ongoing conflict.

In one of the largest overnight drone barrages, Russia claims its air defense forces intercepted 99 drones targeting key cities and infrastructure across western Russia. Airports in St. Petersburg, Kaluga, and Volgograd were paralyzed, with 70+ flights delayed. Train services in Volgograd faced hours-long halts after drone debris damaged railway power lines. Debris fell in residential and industrial areas, reportedly injuring at least one person in Leningrad Oblast.
The Russian Defense Ministry accused Ukraine of orchestrating the strikes, with Kyiv yet to issue a statement.
