The Great Oscar Theft of 2018 – What Happened?

The Great Oscar Theft of 2018 – What Happened?by 👨‍💻 Graham Pierrepoint

This year’s Academy Awards – the 90th such event occurring on record – is usually home to a few dramatic events and head-turning outfits as well as all the unfolding award-giving action. Last year, viewers will have remembered a fiasco as La La Land was initially given the award for Best Picture only for it to actually be for Moonlight – a very public display that hasn’t gone forgotten about! While no such faux pas appear to have gone down at the 2018 Oscars, an entirely different scenario has played out behind the scenes – and it’s surrounded the theft of one of the biggest awards of the night.

Frances McDormand picked up her second Oscar earlier this week as she was awarded for her role in Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri – she had received her statuette for Best Actress and had taken to the stage to advise on ways in which diversity and inclusivity could be brought into further focus in the film industry with just two words – inclusion rider – though it sadly wasn’t long before someone decided to make away with the award for themselves.

It’s thought that McDormand’s Oscar went missing at the Governor’s Ball, a post-awards event that is both ticketed and plays host to all of the big nominees and winners from the night. It’s thought that a ticket holder – Terry Bryant – was behind the theft, with some media outlets even reporting that he took to social media to show off ‘his’ award – as a result, Bryant has been arrested and bail has been set at $20,000. McDormand and her award, however, have since been reunited – with her name engraving intact. She had previously won an Oscar for her role in cult Coen Brothers classic Fargo.

The 2018 Oscars were very big news indeed for the likes of Guillermo Del Toro, who not only picked up Best Director but also saw his movie The Shape of Water pick up three further awards, including Best Original Music Score and Best Production Design. Veteran actor Gary Oldman picked up his first-ever Best Actor Oscar for his role as Winston Churchill in Darkest Hour, Jordan Peele picked up the Best Original Screenplay award for Get Out (beating back plenty of heavy competition), while Disney Pixar’s Coco thrived with both Best Original Song and Best Animated Feature Film under its belt. Get ready for more awards madness this time next year!
