DMK president MK Stalin was sworn in as the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu on Friday. Governor Banwarilal Purohit administered oath to 68-year old Stalin at Raj Bhavan in Chennai. Along with the DMK chief, 33 other ministers from his party also took the oath. The names include 19 former ministers & 15 new faces excluding Stalin's son Udhayanidhi. AIADMK's O Panneerselvam, Congress' P Chidambaram, MDMK chief Vaiko attended ceremony. The ceremony witnessed adherence to Covid-19 guidelines including wearing masks. DMK had fought the elections with its allies & got an absolute majority on its own.

India and the European Union (EU) on Saturday announced their decision to resume negotiations for a balanced and comprehensive trade agreement after a gap of eight years and unveiled an ambitious connectivity partnership, during a virtual meeting between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and leaders of 27 member nations of the bloc. In his remarks, Modi invited the EU to support a proposal by India and South Africa to waive patents on COVID-19 vaccines so that there can be equitable vaccine access for the entire world, officials said. The meeting, participated by leaders of EU member states as well as the top leadership of the EU, also decided to launch negotiations on two other key agreements on investment protection and geographical indications.

Movement of healthcare workers, caregivers & volunteers has been allowed. However, they will need to show valid identity proof to police, if required. Until lockdown begins, all shops will remain open on Saturday, Sunday from 6am to 9pm. Tamil Nadu is among the 10 states that are reporting a spike in daily cases of infection. Tamil Nadu has over 1.3 lakh active Covid cases, while the death toll stands at 15,171.

Chennai Air Customs on May 08 recovered 251 grams of gold worth Rs 12.21 lakh from a passenger who reached airport from Dubai. The gold was found inside the cordless vacuum cleaner. The custom official seized the gold under Customs Act, 1962. Further investigation is on.
