Calcutta HC judge asks CBI if it can probe ex-SC judge
Wednesday, 27 September 2023 Justice Abhijit Gangopadhyay of Calcutta HC questioned whether the CBI could investigate a former Supreme Courtjudge who may have had an understanding with an accused in the Bengal primary teacher recruitment scam. The judge instructed the state to not obstruct the ongoing investigations by the CBI and ED and directed the immediate transfer of a CBI special court judge.
Justice Abhijit Gangopadhyay of the Calcutta High Court announced his resignation today, accompanied by his declaration of joining the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). Speaking at a press conference held in Kolkata at 2:25 pm, Gangopadhyay emphasised that he sees the BJP as the sole national party capable of challenging the dominance of the Trinamool Congress in West Bengal. He clarified his decision by stating his reluctance to align with the Communist Party of India (Marxist) due to his religious beliefs and his aversion to joining the Congress, citing its dynastic nature, which sidelines accomplished leaders like Jairam Ramesh.
