Researcher says 1881 survey recorded Marathas as Kunbis

IndiaTimes Wednesday, 1 November 2023
Historical researcher Vishwas Patil claims that an 1881 British survey showed Maharashtra had 31 lakh Kunbis, who are the ancestors of today's Marathas. Patil argues that the British meticulously recorded the number of residents of each community, including the Kunbis, who were professional cultivators and formed the Maratha cavalry. This claim comes as the Marathas are demanding Kunbi certificates to be eligible for reservation in the OBC category. Activist Manoj Jarange is leading the demand for Kunbi certificates for all Marathas, not just those with documentary proof.
