Saturday, 25 November 2023 External affairs minister S Jaishankar said Saturday people have been conditioned to think of India’s erstwhile maharajas as largely retrogressive, but the reality is that there were many progressive maharajas who tried to create as much space as possible for themselves and for their people from British rule. “It wasn’t that the princely states were the backward parts of India. In many cases, a lot of the advancement, including industrialisation, took place in the princely states. I think it is important today to look at history with fresh eyes and an open mind,” Jaishankar said.
