COP28 outcome signals ‘beginning of the end’ of the fossil fuel era, countries find a way to crack the deal
At the UN climate summit (COP28), more than 195 countries, including India, agreed to transition away from fossil fuels in energy systems. The global stocktake (GST) outcome emphasized the need to limit global warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius and to reduce global greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by 43% by 2030 and 60% by 2035. The agreement, which faced opposition from oil producing nations, opted for the language of transitioning away from fossil fuels. The outcome also called for accelerating action on methane emissions and included provisions for small island developing states.
