Marottichal in Kerala, India is known as the chess village. C Unnikrishnan spearheaded a movement to combat alcoholism and gambling. He introduced chess to the villagers. Now over 4,000 residents play chess regularly. A film, "The Pawn of Marottichal", showcases this transformation. The village gained further recognition during the 2022 Chess Olympiad in Chennai.
