Protest erupts in New York after police officer avoids charges in Eric Garner’s chokehold death

Hundreds took to the streets of New York on Wednesday (July 17) after federal prosecutors chose not to bring charges against a New York City police officer involved in the death of Eric Garner in 2014.

African-American Eric Garner was arrested on charges of selling loose cigarettes and died after being placed in a chokehold by an officer.

Footage shows demonstrators marching from Foley Square to the front of One Police Plaza, holding signs and makeshift coffins.

Eric Garner's two children and mother were present to demand justice and called for the officer to be fired from the NYPD.
