China donates 16 tons of medical supplies to Cambodia to fight COVID-19

Footage shows 16 tons of COVID-19 medical supplies donated by China to Cambodia being unloaded from a plane on Saturday (April 25).

The shipment was unloaded at the Phnom Penh International Airport to help the Southeast Asian country stop the spread of the COVID-19 coronavirus pandemic.

However, Cambodia has not recorded a single coronavirus case over the last two weeks and has a total of only 122 infections - one of the lowest tallies in Asia.

Only five people remain in hospital after 117 have recovered.

Cambodia's Minister of Defence Teah Banh’s adviser Nem Sowath and Li Jingfeng, the military attaché at the Chinese Embassy in Cambodia attended the ceremony.

Sowath said: ''I would like to emphasise that we have many measures within our military medical unit.

This cooperation contributes actively to improving the capacity of our medical preparation.'' Li said that the two countries ''trusted each other'' and that China had been co-operating with Cambodia since the outbreak began.

''The Defence Ministry of China and the Defence Ministry of Cambodia, China’s People’s Liberation Army and the Royal Cambodian Armed Forces have tightly cooperated to support each other.

As for the assistance to fight Covid-19, our cooperation has been comprehensive,'' he said.

The 16 tons of medical supplies - worth around USD 1 million - consisted of 20,000 N95 face masks, 500,000 surgical masks, 500 medical goggles and 10,000 pairs of medical gloves.

There were also 1,000 medical hats, 10,000 protection suits, 20,000 nucleic acid detection kits, 100 medical beds, 100 handheld thermometers, 2,000 bottles (500ml) of disinfection gel, and 100 medical waste bins.

Li added: ''Please have faith in China, as long as COVID-19 is still here, donations from China will continue.” According to official figures, Cambodia has recorded 122 coronavirus cases and has not had a single infection in the last week.
