Three men have been arrested in Omagh and Coalisland, County Tyrone, in connection with the attempted murder of Detective Chief Inspector John Caldwell, the Police Service of Northern Ireland has confirmed.

Simon Byrne has stepped down as chief constable of the Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) with immediate effect. It comes after a month of controversies for the force, and an emergency meeting of the Policing Board last week. Mr Byrne has been under pressure following a major data breach from the PSNI in early August. There are warnings that dissident Republicans are claiming to have sensitive information about some Northern Ireland police officers, following a major security leak. Apologising for the data breach, the chief constable of Northern Ireland, Simon Byrne said advice was being given to officers and staff who might be affected.

After receiving a Freedom of Information request, the force published a spreadsheet containing statistical information on the strength of the PSNI - but a second tab in the document contained entries of more than 10,000 officers and staff members.
