HAZARDOUS Chemical Leakage & Oil Spill | High Alert in Kerala after Liberian Ship sinks
The Kerala state government has declared a statewide emergency after the Liberian-flagged cargo ship MSC ELSA 3 sank off its coast on Sunday.
The ship was carrying 640 containers, including 13 with hazardous cargo like calcium carbide, which releases flammable acetylene gas.
The incident has triggered fears of a major ecological disaster.
Authorities have issued alerts for potential oil spills and toxic container drift, especially in southern Kollam and Alappuzha.
The Indian Coast Guard has deployed two vessels and a Dornier aircraft to contain the spill, as over 450 metric tonnes of oil and diesel are feared to have leaked into the Arabian Sea.
While all 24 crew members were rescued, residents and fishermen are urged to stay away from affected areas as coastal contamination looms.

Yemenâs Ansarullah leader Abdul-Malik al-Houthi has declared that the reopening of Israelâs Eilat port is now âimpossible,â reaffirming Yemenâs firm blockade on Israeli-linked shipping through the Red Sea, Gulf of Aden, and Arabian Sea. In a defiant televised address, al-Houthi warned all shipping companies against aiding Israel, promising decisive retaliation. Yemenâs naval campaign began in November 2023 in solidarity with Gaza, following Israelâs bombing campaign. Al-Houthi denounced Israeli airstrikes on Hudaydah and praised Yemenâs missile defense systems. He stated that despite near-total U.S. backing, Israel had failed militarily, especially in Gaza, where resistance fighters killed and wounded nearly 20 Israeli soldiers in a single operation.
