News today 2025

The United States has called on NATO allies to raise defence spending to 5% of GDP, in a marked escalation of previous expectations, drawing mixed reactions at a meeting of defence ministers in Brussels.

U.S. Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth, speaking on behalf of the Trump administration, said the era of “freeloading” was over, stressing that America could no longer shoulder the alliance’s security burden alone.

The demand, made just weeks ahead of the NATO Summit in The Hague, raises concerns over alliance unity, particularly as many European countries still fall short of the original 2% target.
