On July 15, 2017, Justine Ruszczyk, also known as Justine Damond, a 40-year-old Australian-American woman, was shot and killed by Mohamed Noor, a Somali-American Minneapolis Police Department officer, after she had called 9-1-1 to report the possible assault of a woman in an alley behind her house. Noor was ultimately arrested and charged with second-degree manslaughter and third-degree murder following an eight-month investigation by the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension and the Hennepin County Attorney's Office. On April 30, 2019 he was convicted of third-degree murder and manslaughter but acquitted of intentional second-degree murder. Three days later, the City of Minneapolis awarded $US20 million to the family of Damond for violation of her civil rights.
