Was Elon Musk’s April Fool the Most Expensive Prank Ever?by 👨‍💻 Graham Pierrepoint

There’s no secret as to whether or not Elon Musk has plenty of capital to go around – and beyond this, it would have seemed odd if a figure as important as his didn’t acknowledge April Fools’ Day online in some way. While some brands went the safe route – such as Google Maps introducing ‘Where’s Waldo’ into the mix for a while – others, such as Musk, decided to be a little bit more daring when it came to pranking their fans and followers. However, while Musk’s prank this year may have been clever in a way (if not easy to look past for those in the know), it may have cost his company Tesla a fair amount of value in the bargain.

Tesla is thought to have experienced a few difficulties lately – though Musk decided to take such news in his stride and launch an April Fools’ Day joke which alleged that the company had in fact gone bankrupt. “Despite intense efforts to raise money, including a last-ditch mass sale of Easter Eggs, we are sad to report that Tesla has gone completely and totally bankrupt. So bankrupt, you can’t believe it,” wrote Musk, in a fashion which is clearly tongue-in-cheek and part of the season – however, the joke may not have sat well with shareholders or those interested in buying into the firm.

Reports are varied on how the industry and the world at large reacted to Musk’s joke, but some outlets are suggesting that his social media posts about going bankrupt – which, ultimately, are just jokes – could have had a further negative impact upon Tesla’s value in the marketplace. Trust in Tesla is on a balance right now as it not only seems that the firm is continuing to look to turn a profit (it hasn’t done so since 2003), but it is also embroiled in a case where a person died in a crash involving one of the brand’s auto-piloted cars. Certainly – making a joke about bankruptcy at such a contentious time was pretty brave!

However, Musk continues to run operations with Tesla and his space exploration unit, SpaceX, which recently sent a car into the stratosphere – Musk is not one to avoid the limelight, and while his obvious jokes may have gone down well with fans, time will tell as to whether or not the prank was bittersweet!
