IndiaTimes Thursday, 12 October 2023
The Central government has stated that the water of the Ganga river, known as 'Gangajal', which is used for prayers by households across the country, is exempt from Goods and Services Tax (GST). This clarification came after Congress chief Mallikarjun Kharge accused the government of imposing 18% GST on Gangajal. The Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs (CBIC) clarified that puja samagri, including Gangajal, has been exempt from GST since its introduction.
