Russian oil cargoes head away from India amid payment issues

IndiaTimes Tuesday, 2 January 2024
Vessels hauling crude from Russia, which had been idling off India, are now headed eastwards. Concerns over oil payments to Moscow caused a slump in arrivals last month. Five ships carrying Sokol oil are moving towards the Malacca Strait, while a sixth is close to Sri Lanka. China seems to have stepped in to save the idling Sokol cargoes. India's oil imports from Russia fell to their lowest since January 2023 due to payment issues. The US and its allies have imposed sanctions on entities breaching the cap on Russian crude exports.
