There was always going to be the chance that Venom was going to be divisive. As a moviegoing public, we have been spoilt by the likes of the finely-tuned Marvel Cinematic Universe – and while there have been slight misfires from DC and complete disasters in the form of Fantastic Four over the past few years, it does seem to be getting harder and harder for anything outside of the MCU to make a sizeable splash. That seems to have altered a little – Venom, while widely derided by many critics (though praised by One News Page for its sheer audacity and self-awareness), has won over audience curiosity. The box office figures say it all!

Working on a budget of $100 million before promotion and marketing, Venom has scored over $200 million worldwide barely a week after its release. Movie budgets are generally doubled up to cover for marketing, so thus far, the movie is already pretty much breaking even. Was the lack of critic reviews ahead of the release helpful in this regard? Will the reviews continue to inspire morbid curiosity? It’s hard to say at this point, of course, but Venom does at least have the honor of having broken a record in its first week of emerging – and that’s amazing news amid the critical backlash.

The movie is reported to hold the record for the biggest October opening weekend domestically – and by a huge chalk. The film is said to have brought in around $80 million on home soil in its opening few days, which is around $25 million ahead of the previous record-holder, 2013’s space disaster epic Gravity. It’s also in second place on all-time fall opening weekends, though it perhaps had a bit of a mountain to climb to score one over on 2017’s It, which opened to an astonishing $123 million in its opening weekend last year.

In any case, will the positive box office figures mean the likelihood of a sequel? The sequel hook at the end of the movie – no spoilers here – may well be worth getting excited about. It’s been a big year for box office surprises, with Jason Statham shark epic The Meg having sunk its teeth into around four times its production budget thus far. This may well mean that big burly monsters with enormously sharp teeth have a second outing on the big screen in the years to come!
