Here's Why You Probably Shouldn't Get Your Eyes Tattooedby

Should sclera tinting be illegal?

Tattoos are incredibly mainstream now – and while it may largely be a generational trend, it seems that the lengths to which some people are willing to brand and color themselves are growing more and more outlandish. You can more or less have any port of your body inked or permanently arted up – and that goes for extremely sensitive areas, too. One trend that has taken off in recent months is sclera tinting – and if you want to look away now, this involves the coloring of one’s eye.

A model has recently advised of the dangers of getting your eyes tattooed for the very reason that she has suffered extreme pain and potentially lifelong scarring as a result. Canadian Catt Gallinger’s recent Facebook post exposing the dangers of the procedure have been shared thousands of times – and while she had merely wanted to tint her eye whites purple, she has instead been left with damage that may be permanent. Gallinger’s injected eye cannot see properly, and swelled up due to undiluted ink being used during the procedure.

Sclera coloring is seen as extremely dangerous and is warned against by medical professionals – and, as Gallinger’s story shows, it could leave you with permanent, painful and debilitating scarring for the rest of your life. What is most interesting about this treatment and the controversy that surrounds it is that Luna Cobra, who is largely credited with having created the procedure, is now suggesting that it should be made illegal. He is, in his own words, the first tattoo artist to have perfected the procedure – but now, he is less keen, if not completely against sclera tinting.

“I think it’s super important that this becomes illegal,” comments Cobra – a statement straight from the horse’s mouth which should hopefully resonate with thousands hoping to take their body art to the next level. While skin tattooing and alternative body piercing is undertaken by licenced and safe professionals the world over, there are still some procedures that even those won’t handle – and sclera tinting is seen as being particularly Avant Garde to the point of it endangering the person who is having the work done.

If you’re interested in making a mark in your own special way – through body art or piercing – you should always feel free! But do bear in mind that there are some procedures that simply aren’t worth risking your way of life over.
