Army creates a new major general-led human rights cell
Friday, 1 January 2021 () The 13-lakh strong Army has created a new human rights cell headed by a Major-General for “greater transparency and probity” in its functioning in disturbed areas like Jammu and Kashmir and the northeast. Major General Gautam Chauhan, who was commissioned into the Gorkha Rifles, has taken charge as the first additional director general (human rights) at the Army headquarters in New Delhi.
Indian Army organised Jammu and Kashmir's biggest talent hunt-cum-music concert show ''SHAURYA'' at Sher-i-Kashmir International Conference Centre (SKICC) in Srinagar on January 18. Famous Bollywood singer, Sukhwinder Singh performed live at SKICC in front of an enthralling gathering. On the occasion, senior officers of Army and a large number of music lovers were present. J and K Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha also attended the event. Sinha also felicitated young achievers of Kashmir Valley who have performed well in different fields.
General Officer Commanding of Army's Chinar Corps commented on the terror situation in Jammu and Kashmir. Lt Gen BS Raju said that Pakistan attracts Kashmiri youth for education and then diverts some of them into terrorism. He added that as security forces were plugging gaps in border infrastructure, Pakistan was sending drugs and weapons via drones and tunnels. He said that the forces are countering this using advanced technology. He also said that at 217, strength of terrorists in the Valley was at a decadal low. Watch the full video for more.

Lieutenant Governor of Jammu and Kashmir, Manoj Sinha on January 20 appealed to beneficiaries to get themselves vaccinated by COVID-19 vaccines, amid apprehensions of their efficacy. "There is a need to spread awareness about the vaccine...Both the COVID-19 vaccines were given emergency use approval only after scientists were convinced of their safety. I appeal to all beneficiaries to get themselves vaccinated," said LG Manoj Sinha. COVID-19 vaccination drive was roll out on January 16 across the country.
Activists of Dogra Front on January 20 staged protest against the web series 'Tandav' in Jammu and Kashmir's Dogra. 'Tandav', an Amazon Prime Video-based series addressed the backlash against its content that has hurt religious sentiments of many viewers. Muslim people also showed their anguish against the web series by showing placards. The protestors alleged that the creators of the web series have tried to disrupt the communal harmony in the country. Earlier in the day, Maharashtra Government has received a complaint regarding 'Tandav' and will be taking appropriate action against the web series. Earlier on Monday, the cast and crew of the Saif Ali Khan starrer political-drama had extended their apologies to the viewers for "unintentionally" hurting their sentiments. An FIR was also registered at Lucknow's Hazratganj Kotwali against Amazon Prime's India and team of 'tandav' for allegedly hurting religious sentiments on Monday.
Three terrorists were killed in an encounter near Jammu and Kashmir's Srinagar on December 30. The operation began on December 29 evening when security forces received intelligence about terrorists hiding in a building. Major General HS Sahi, GOC, Kilo Force, said that the terrorists were planning a big attack. He said that all appeals to the terrorists to surrender were met with gunfire and grenades. In an encounter between security forces and terrorists that ensued in Srinagar, three terrorists were neutralised. GoC Kilo Force, Major General HS Sahi said, "We had inputs about terrorists preparing for a huge attack in the area. A building near National Highway was cordoned and terrorists asked to surrender. As one of them tried to come out, other 2 terrorists hiding inside threw grenades at forces. The joint operation launched by Army, JKP and CRPF concluded at 11:30 am today. We again appealed to terrorists to surrender in morning but they replied by firing and threw grenades. Thereafter, all 3 terrorists were neutralised." The encounter between security forces and terrorists had started on night of December 29.
Ranjan Banerjee, senior vice-president of Aditya Birla Group, joined the BJP in Kolkata on January 20. He joined the party in the presence of BJP's national vice president Mukul Roy. Meanwhile, Arindam Bhattacharya, a former Congress MLA who later switched to TMC joined BJP. He joined BJP in the presence of party leader Kailash Vijayvargiya in New Delhi. Speaking to ANI, Ranjan Banerjee said, "I thank BJP for giving me this opportunity to serve the people of the state. We need to bring industries here so that people can get employment." Bengal is going for polls in the mid of 2021.
Union Health Minister Dr Harsh Vardhan inaugurated the 'Burn and Plastic Surgery' block at All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), New Delhi on January 18. “It is a matter of joy for AIIMS family as a golden chapter has been added to its development. An exclusive state of the art department for burns and plastic surgery has been added. All facilities related to burns and plastic surgery will be available here,” said Dr Harsh Vardhan. He added, “Nearly 70 lakh people across the country are victim of burns per year. Out of these, nearly 1.4 lakh people succumb to death. Roughly, every four minutes, one person dies due to burns.” Dr Harsh Vardhan also congratulated AIIMS Director, Dr Randeep Guleria and Burn and Plastic Surgery Block Head, Maneesh Singhal for their efforts.
