No building of their own, Ahmedabad traffic police borrow lock-ups

IndiaTimes Saturday, 29 July 2023
Tathya Patel's arrest in the Iskcon flyover tragedy that claimed nine lives has brought to light a critical infrastructure challenge faced by the city traffic police. Though the 19-year-old and his father, Pragnesh Patel, were arrested by the SG-2 division traffic police, the two were confined in the lock-up at Sarkhej police station. The SG-2 division traffic police had to "borrow" the lock-up as they function from a room above the Sarkhej police station building and have no cop shop of their own. In fact, of the 63 police stations in the city, nearly 25% or 16, including 14 traffic police precincts, have no lock-ups.
