Not advisable to tinker with existing age of consent under POCSO Act: Law Commission to govt

IndiaTimes Friday, 29 September 2023
The Law Commission has submitted a report to the law ministry stating that it is not advisable to change the age of consent under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act in India. The Commission argued that adolescents aged 16 to 18 should be considered children and should have the protection of the law. They also recommended introducing guided judicial discretion in sentencing cases involving children in this age group. The Commission also suggested establishing a centralised national portal for electronic First Information Reports (e-FIRs) to simplify the registration process.
