K'taka to cut buffer zone along 2 rivers near B'luru

IndiaTimes Wednesday, 11 October 2023
Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar has announced that the buffer zone along Kumudvathi and Arkavathi rivers in Bengaluru will be reduced in accordance with previous decisions. An environment policy research institute had opposed this, fearing it would hinder river rejuvenation efforts. Currently, the buffer zone extends 1km on either side of the rivers. Shivakumar stated that the reduction had been decided in 2019 and 2021 but had not been enforced, leading to illegal construction in the area. He plans to regulate construction and address legal challenges to the decision.
