Engineers develop new tunnelling method for Kashmir rail link project

IndiaTimes Sunday, 22 October 2023
Engineers of the Indian Railways have developed a new tunnelling method to overcome the difficult terrain in the Himalayas and complete the construction of Tunnel-1 on the Katra-Banihal section of the Kashmir rail link project. The method involves providing pre-excavation support measures and using rigid supports called 'ISHB' to stabilize the tunnel. The engineers also changed the alignment of the rail line to minimize the portion passing through the tricky terrain. Despite the challenging conditions, the engineers are determined to complete the tunnel by early next year.
