Political maverick who paved way for Indira’s return

IndiaTimes Tuesday, 7 November 2023
Indira Gandhi's victory in the Chikkamagaluru Lok Sabha by-election in 1978 was credited to DB Chandre Gowda, the local MP. Gowda not only vacated his seat for Indira but also orchestrated her campaign against her arch-enemy, George Fernandes. He ensured that Indira's message reached the rural masses by translating slogans into Kannada. Despite Gowda's efforts, Indira's margin of victory was lower than his own in the previous general election. Over the years, Gowda represented multiple political parties and held various positions in the government. His death is considered a loss to Karnataka politics.
