14 months on, pontiff gets bail in Pocso case

IndiaTimes Wednesday, 8 November 2023
The Karnataka High Court has granted conditional bail to Shivamurthy Murugha Sharanaru, the pontiff of Murugharajendra Bruhanmutt, Chitradurga, who was arrested in a case registered under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (Pocso) Act. The seer has been in judicial custody since September 2, 2022, and will now have to surrender his passport, stay away from Chitradurga district until the end of the trial, and attend court proceedings via video conference. The judge noted discrepancies in the statements of the alleged victims and other girls at the hostel, raising doubts about the case. Additionally, the court quashed proceedings against the mutt's former administrator and his wife in a conspiracy case related to the pontiff's arrest.
