Cabinet declares social reformer Basavanna as Karnataka cultural icon

The state cabinet of Karnataka has declared 12th-century social reformer Basavanna as the cultural leader of the state and named Freedom Park in Shivamogga city after mystic-saint Vachana poet, Allama Prabhu. This move is seen as an effort by the Congress to appeal to the politically significant Lingayat community in the run-up to the Lok Sabha elections.
