Cargo movement through waterways up 700% in 10 years

Government's emphasis on promoting cargo transportation through inland waterways, including rivers and creeks, has led to a remarkable 700% surge in the conveyance of goods through this eco-friendly mode of transportation over the last decade. According to data, the freight volume transported via waterways has escalated from 18 million tonnes (MTs) in 2013-14 to an impressive 126 MTs in the fiscal year 2022-23. In the ongoing financial year, the transportation of cargo through inland waterways has already reached 100 MTs by December 2023.
