3 attempts to derail trains in past one week, says Railways
Monday, 9 September 2024 The railway ministry is concerned about recent attempts to derail trains and stone pelting incidents. A train collision with a cooking cylinder in Kanpur was narrowly avoided, indicating criminal intent. Since June last year, there have been 17 similar incidents, prompting increased vigilance on sensitive tracks to prevent mishaps.
In a stunning betrayal, Turkish construction firm Gulermak has reportedly fled Kanpur, leaving behind ₹80 crore in unpaid dues and 53 Indian contractors high and dry. The company, responsible for the underground section of the Kanpur Metro, delayed payments for nearly ten months—then vanished. This came in the wake of nationwide anti-Turkey protests tied to Ankara's stance in the India-Pakistan conflict. Despite repeated complaints, UPMRC and government authorities took no action, allowing foreign officials to evade accountability. Is this a case of pure negligence—or a political embarrassment India can’t afford to ignore?
