Almost 20,000 care home residents in England and Wales have died with coronavirus, the majority dying in their care home, official figures show. Death certificates for 19,394 residents mentioned “novel coronavirus” between March 2 and June 12, the Office for National Statistics (ONS) said.

Health Secretary Matt Hancock praised the role played by BAME medical and care workers following the PHE report on the impact of the virus across different groups. At the Downing Street press conference he said: “This is a particularly timely publication, because right across the world, people are angry about racial injustice. “And I get that. Black lives matter. “And I want to say this to everyone who works in the NHS and in social care: I value the contribution that you make, everybody equally."

Widespread testing and contact tracing was stopped in mid-March due to the “sheer scale of cases in the UK”, a senior Public Health England official has said. Professor Yvonne Doyle, PHE’s medical director, told the Commons Science and Technology Committee that hundreds of thousands of people had been exposed to coronavirus by the time testing and tracing was stopped around March 12.
