The cold snap is closing in, and so is the festive season – and it’s time to take a quick look back at some of the bigger stories from Decembers past, as we fire up the One News Page time machine once again to take a peek at our recent and not-so recent history – as a species!

December 10th, 1901 – First Nobel Peace Prizes
The Nobel Peace Prize celebrates its 117th birthday this week, as the first-ever recipients – activist Frederic Passy and Red Cross head Jean Henri Durant – received their accolades in 1901.

December 11th, 1936 – Edward VIII Abdicates
Has there been a more stunning Royal scandal since? On this day in 1936, King Edward VIII of Great Britain revealed via radio that he would be abdicating the throne and marrying Wallis Simpson as a basic citizen.

December 12th, 1800 – A Capital Confirmed
How do you decide upon a capital city in a country as big as the US? Washington DC ascended to capital status on this day in 1800.

December 13th, 2003 – Saddam Hussein Captured

December 14th, 1542 – The Youngest Monarch in History?

December 15th, 1939 – ‘Gone With The Wind’ Released
Frankly, my dear, plenty gave a damn – as the Clark Gable and Vivien Leigh classic remains the highest-grossing movie of all time (with inflation not adjusted), following its Atlanta premiere on this day almost 80 years ago.

December 16th, 1689 – Britain’s Own Bill of Rights
On this date in 1689, England would produce its own Bill of Rights which would ultimately curb monarchy power and would establish the current regular election system in the country we see today.
