Crown for rebel beauty; Nicaragua charges pageant head with 'treason'

The director of Nicaragua's national beauty pageant, Karen Celebertti, and her family members were accused of "treason" for their alleged participation in the 2018 mass protests against President Daniel Ortega. This comes after a Nicaraguan woman, Sheynnis Palacios, was crowned Miss Universe and seen as a symbol of opposition to the government. Celebertti, her son, and her husband are accused of conspiring to use the pageant as a platform for political ambushes, with alleged financing from foreign agents.
