New Polish government inherits troubled budget legacy

Poland's outgoing nationalists have added strains on the budget with last-minute spending commitments, complicating efforts of new Prime Minister Donald Tusk. The Law and Justice (PiS) party's loss of parliamentary majority has led to subsidies for coal mines, bonuses for company managers, and other outlays. This comes on top of big-ticket items already in the budget, such as high military spending and increases in wages and social transfers.
