Heroic Medics Operate Through Tremors as Kamchatka Quake Triggers Tsunamis
Wednesday, 30 July 2025 () North Kurilsk on the Kuril Islands was struck by multiple tsunami waves following an 8.7-magnitude earthquake in Kamchatka—the region's most powerful seismic event since 1952. A second quake of magnitude 7.9 soon followed, prompting a state of emergency. The epicenter was located 161 kilometers off the eastern coast of the Kamchatka Peninsula at a depth of 32 kilometers. The quake’s sheer force triggered tsunami warnings as far as Japan and the United States. Footage from the disaster area shows waves battering coastal infrastructure. According to Sakhalin Governor Valery Limarenko, the third tsunami wave was the most destructive. Despite the scale of the disaster, no casualties were reported on Sakhalin.
