Thousands March to Demand Resignation of Macedonian Government Over Planned Name Change

Thousands of people marched through Skopje, the capital of Macedonia, on November 28, in protest against a planned change to the country’s name. The name change is designed to end a long-running dispute with Greece, which has its own region called Macedonia.

Greece objected to its northern neighbor calling itself Macedonia at the break-up of the former Yugoslavia in 1991.After years of talks – and the lifting of Greece’s veto preventing its neighbor’s bid to join NATO and the European Union – both countries have eventually settled on the formal name, the Republic of North Macedonia. The protest march on November 28 was organised by Macedonia’s conservative opposition party VMRO-DPMNE, which was in power until 2016.
