China retailers slash iPhone prices

Fresh signs Friday (January 11) that Apple may be struggling to shift iPhones in the expected numbers.

Chinese retailers have slashed prices for the handsets by as much as 118 dollars.

At least six major sellers including JD.com are offering discounts according to Reuters checks.

Unusually, the price cuts cover Apple's latest XS and XR models.

Media reports claim Apple has cut wholesale prices for the handsets in China, though the U.S. tech giant won't confirm that.

Apple has been trailing local rivals like Huawei in the world's largest market for mobile phones.

Chinese-branded phones are often much cheaper than the U.S. products.

Last week Apple issued its first revenue warning in nearly 12 years, citing poor Chinese demand among the reasons.

But it's not just the iPhone maker to suffer.

Overall demand for smartphones is on the slide in China as economic growth slows.

Shipments of the handsets down over 15 percent in the country last year.
