Over $170,000 Donated to Child With Rare EEE Disease

Over $170,000 Donated to Child With Rare EEE Disease Five-year-old Sophia Garabedian was diagnosed with Eastern equine encephalitis earlier this month.

The virus, which is spread by mosquitoes, causes potentially fatal brain swelling.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, specific treatment is unknown.

Thanks to a GoFundMe created for Sophia, $170,000 has been donated for her medical stay.

According to the fundraising page, she is now in fair condition at a Boston hospital.

GoFundMe, via statement EEE is a very dangerous disease that kills 30 percent of those who contract it.

The CDC adds that there are up to 10 cases each year in the U.S. In 2019, signs of EEE have mostly popped up in the Northeastern section of the country.
