MASS HATCHING OF OLIVE RIDLEY SEA TURTLES ON RUSHIKULYA BEACH GANJAM, ODISHA, INDIA (MARCH 24, 2020) (BIPRO BEHERA - MUST ON SCREEN COURTESY @BIPRO_SEAS/ NO RESALE) 2.

FEMALE OLIVE RIDLEY SEA TURTLES NESTING ON RUSHIKULYA BEACH STORY: Thousands of Olive Ridley sea turtles hatched as recorded by eyewitness, Bipro Behera, on Sunday (May 10) on Rushikulya Beach in Odisha, India.

The hatching happened 45 to 55 days after the mass nesting, which was also recorded by Behera on March 24.

Mohit Mudliar from Dakshin Foundation told Reuters that females of this turtle species arrive in their hundreds of thousands to nest together in an event called 'Arribada'.

This ensures that most of the eggs survive from predators.

India has one of the largest populations of Olive Ridleys and this phenomenon is observed every year, Mudliar added.

Dakshin Foundation has carried out an estimation of turtle numbers and looked at how well the nests were hatched n Rushikulya Beach for the past ten years.
