Major Ramaswamy Parameswaran, commissioned to the Mahar regiment for Operation Pawan, as per the Indo-Sri Lanka Agreement, was sent to Sri Lanka to maintain law and order as part of the Indian Peace Keeping Force.

On the night of 25th November 1987, the Major was returning with his column of troops after a search operation when a group of militants ambushed them.
