South African detective heading gang investigation shot dead at home

Detective Charl Kinnear, a detective investigating gangs and other organised crime, was shot in his car outside his home in Bishop Lavis at just after 3pm.

Detective Charl Kinnear, a detective investigating gangs and other organised crime, was shot in his car outside his home in Bishop Lavis at just after 3pm.

According to eye witnesses in the street, they heard three shots.

Captain Sharon Japtha of the Anti-Gang Unit and General Jeremy Vearey (Head of Detectives), visited the scene at forensic teams scoured the scene for clues.

Footage shows Japtha and Kinnear leaving the Cape Town Magistrate’s Court on 3 January 2018, when Kinnear testified in the bail application of Nafiz Modack and Colin Booysen, who were facing charges of extortion after restaurant and nightclub owners accused them of trying extort protection money out of them in an attempt to gain control of the nightclub security industry in Cape Town.

Brigadier Novelwa Potelwa, speaking to media at the scene said police are investigating the matter and the 72 hour plan to bring in the perpetrators had been activated.
