Lafayette School Corporation serves over 950 English language learning students.

Recently the district has seen advancements in EL learner’s proficiency rates.

I talked with educators about the techniques they're using to help students learn to speak english fluently.

(nats( lafayette school corporation serves over 950 english language learning students.

"we are putting a lot of teachers in to purdue classes that are language foundations and language acquisition so that's another huge thing we have done."- brenda one of those teachers who has gone through el training is abby hall.

"even though english isn't their first language they never allow that to stop them from being motivated determined or driven they are some of the hardest working kids i have ever interacted with."

16 percent of el students at sunnyside intermediate school have tested out as english class as fluent.

The state has an overall fluency rate of seven percent.

That success rate is something el director brenda ward credits to training more teachers to be able to teach el students and working with administrators.

"we went over data with administrators so that they knew what too look for why it was important so they could help their teachers build capacity.

(nats( for teachers like eliza talamantes, that capacity and training is something she feels is important to have in a public school setting.

"you know i really believe that public education is for everyone.

And if you aren't considering the needs of english language learners your not really providing them that equal educational opportunity so i think it's really important."- eliza and helping el students is something that will help everyone in a classroom become more successful.

"whatever you do that will help and english learner will help the entire class.

So any of the techniques we use to our english learners understand the lesson the content is only going to help the rest of the class as well."- brenda according to educators it usually takes five to seven years to become fluent in a second language.

Some students are becoming fluent as early as third grade.

Currently there are 20 teachers that are getting el certified district wide.
