The Bank of England says the British economy is on track for a strong bounce back, and is expected to have recovered from the Covid pandemic by the end of the year.
Governor Andrew Bailey explains the unemployment rate is expected to peak just under 5.5%, adding without the furlough scheme, it would have been an "intolerable" situation.

Chief Cashier of the Bank of England Sarah John has welcomed the new bank notes featuring a portrait of His Majesty The King. The King welcomed Mrs John and Governor of the Bank of England Andrew Bailey to Buckingham Palace, where he was presented with ÂŁ5, ÂŁ10, ÂŁ20 and ÂŁ50 notes. These are the first notes which feature the image of His Majesty. Mrs John said it's "a great pleasure to be able to show the King what he's going to look like on the bank notes of the future." The Bank of England has voted to keep interest rates unchanged, but showed what was perhaps the clearest sign in years that cuts could come in the months ahead. Bank governor Andrew Bailey said the economy is “not yet at the point” where rates can be lowered, but things are “moving in the right direction”. For the first time since September 2021, no-one on the nine-person decision-making body that sets interest rates voted for an increase.

Chancellor Jeremy Hunt announces UK inflation fell to the lowest level in more than two years, to 3.4%. He would not be drawn on whether the fall would allow him to announce pre-election tax cuts in an autumn statement. NBC reports that police departments in the United States
have seen their first increase in ranks, changing course
on a historic exodus of officers in recent years.
According to a recent survey,
2023 saw more officers sworn in
than any of the previous four years. .
At the same time, the survey by the Police Executive
Research Forum (PERF) also found that fewer law
enforcement officers resigned or retired in 2023. .

the COVID pandemic and nationwide protests against
police brutality following the death of George Floyd. .

NBC reports that declining numbers left
many police departments with a shortage of
officers, which resulted in slower response times.
Chuck Wexler, executive director of PERF, warns that many police departments are still struggling to recruit and retain officers.
According to Wexler, law enforcement , "isn't out of the woods yet.".
At least a dozen smaller police departments in
the nation have been forced to disband, leaving those
municipalities reliant upon state or county police forces.

change application requirements to increase hiring
