Syria has shut the Kassab border crossing with Turkey as massive wildfires edge dangerously close to the Turkish province of Hatay. Sparked amid severe drought and recent sectarian unrest, the fires have destroyed swathes of Syriaâs green belt and now threaten cross-border regions. Firefighters from Turkey, Jordan, and Iraq joined Syrian civil defense teams to battle the blaze. With Attera burning just 4 km from the Turkish border, Ankara is on high alert. Officials say the spread is due to extreme heat and windânot arson.
