In a dramatic escalation of Turkeyâs political crackdown, three more opposition mayors â Abdurrahman Tutdere of Adiyaman, Zeydan Karalar of Adana, and Muhittin Bocek of Antalya â have been arrested in sweeping early-morning raids. All are members of the main opposition party, CHP, which has faced a wave of detentions following Istanbul Mayor Ekrem Imamogluâs imprisonment in March. The mayors are accused of bribery, bid-rigging, and organized crime, though exact charges remain undisclosed. The arrests come amid mounting criticism of President Erdoganâs government, with critics claiming the detentions are politically motivated attempts to weaken the CHP ahead of future elections. Imamoglu, now jailed, has since been nominated as the CHPâs presidential candidate, and his arrest sparked Turkeyâs largest protests in a decade. Observers warn of further instability if the crackdown continues.

Rama Duwajiâartist, activist, and wife of NYC Democratic mayoral nominee Zohran Mamdaniâhas stepped into the spotlight after months of silence. The 27-year-old Syrian-American illustrator, known for her pro-Palestinian work, had avoided campaign publicity, sparking controversy and speculation. Critics claimed her art and political stance made her a liability.
But on June 24, as Mamdani celebrated his win, she stood beside himâsilent, composed, present. Born in Texas, raised partly in Dubai, Duwaji's work explores Gaza, race, identity, and dissent. Her pieces have supported Palestinian students and questioned U.S. policies. She and Mamdani met on a dating app, married in a private ceremony, and have since become one of NYCâs most-watched political couples. Now, as Mamdani eyes City Hall, all eyes are on Rama Duwajiâthe woman who may soon be NYCâs first lady.
